Safe Patient Limits Save Lives

Founded in 1903, the Massachusetts Nurses Association is the professional association and largest union of registered nurses in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Its 23,000 members advance the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Legislature and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.  This year, the MNA, along with the Committee to Ensure Patient Safety, a broad coalition of citizen and health care advocacy groups, is pursuing a ballot initiative, the Patient Safety Act, that would establish safe patient limits for nurses based on the severity of patients’ needs and the unit where the patient is placed. Right now, outside of the ICU, there is no limit on the number of patients assigned to nurses in our state’s hospital.  Nurses in Massachusetts say safe patient limits will save lives.  More than 80 percent report preventable complications and poor outcomes for patients, and nearly third report patient deaths due to nurses being assigned too many patients.  Dozens of studies in the most prestigious medical and nursing journals show that care suffers when nurses are assigned too many patients and the same studies shows patient care improves when nurses have safe patient limits.  California passed a law establishing safe patient limits in 2004 and the results have been universally positive.  Patient outcomes are better, costs are lower, and nurses and patients are more satisfied with their care. The MNA is committed to winning voter support for safe patient limits in 2018 for the safety of our patients and for the future of our profession.  For more information about the MNA, and for information on the Patient Safety Act, visit

Project Nightingale seeks to connect the nursing community on a global scale, from first year students to experienced mentors, educational institutions, hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices and job opportunities, in all fields, and in all places.

Through our magazine, The Nightingale, and our mini-series, “The Pulse” we seek to inspire nurses to explore empathy, caring for self and their patients, preventing burnout, displaying effective teamwork, communication, listening, leadership and more. A special focus is on the nurse as the care catalyst for effective interdisciplinary team-dynamics.  Within these products, nurses encourage other nurses, laugh and cry with other nurses and most importantly set the example for nurses so they can persevere in their careers and go on to serve as seasoned leaders, compassionate patient advocates, and dynamic care coordinators within the interdisciplinary health care team. For more information, please see, or email

The more nurses can share together, the stronger the nursing community becomes, improving not only the careers of nurses and the interdisciplinary health care team, but most importantly, the care provided to patients.

CDH International

Founder of CHERUBS - The Association of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Research, Awareness and Support

CHERUBS was created to help families of babies born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia by providing support services, promoting research and raising awareness in 1995. In 2017, the organization evolved into CDH International and CHERUBS became the family support division of a new, global entity.

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is a birth defect that occurs when a baby's diaphragm fails to fully form, allowing abdominal organs to enter the chest cavity and preventing lung growth. CDH occurs in 1 in every 2500 babies, which equals to 1600 babies born each year with CDH in the United States alone. The overall survival rate is 50%. The cause is unknown.

Founded in 1995 by 2 parents, CDH International is the world's oldest and largest non-profit organization for families affected by CDH, serving over 6300 members in 70 countries. By working closely with hospitals and other charities, CDH International has led the way for families for over two decades and fought for awareness, research funding and greatly needed services for all families, at all hospitals, around the world.

We are here to help families at the time of diagnoses, through birth, hospitalization and even after the death of their children. No family has to fight CDH alone. And we will keep fighting until CDH is eradicated.
